Charles Butler

Pastor

Charles Butler grew up in Detroit, Michigan, with his parents and older sister. His family did not attend church. But after moving across town the summer he turned 15, he came to Christ through a home Bible study for youth. God called Charles to the ministry after his first year of studying architecture at University of Detroit. With the blessing and affirmation of his pastor and other ministers in Detroit, he came to Chicago to train for ministry at the Moody Bible Institute, with additional studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL. He has served on the pastoral staff at the Rock of Our Salvation Church, Armitage Baptist Church, and The Moody Church, all in Chicago.
In 2019, Charles joined with fellow pastor and long-time friend Steve Mason to launch Hope Church Chicago, a multi-cultural, multi-generational congregation. Charles and his wife Donna lead worship, and Charles and Steve shared the preaching until Steve's call to Winnetka Bible Church in April 2022. Charles' passion is for people to know God and His Word, to trust Him with themselves, and to walk with Him through their entire lives.
Charles and Donna married in 1981. God has blessed them with five sons, one daughter, three daughters-in-law, and eight grandchildren. One of their sons and two of their grandchildren went directly to heaven from the womb, but the others are often at Charles and Donna’s home, which always makes for a great day! Their daughter Faith, who appears with them in the photo above, has several disabilities and lives with her parents.
Charles and Donna began doing music together as students at Moody Bible Institute in 1979. Their entire family is musical. Charles and Donna also minister together in couples counseling.
Charles is a fan of mainstream Science Fiction (Star Wars, Star Trek), and enjoys reading military-political novels and some fantasy. His favorite authors are Tom Clancy, Stephen Lawhead, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Lee Childs.
