40 Days of Praise - Day 13

Day Thirteen

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God”

John 1:12

The young woman had been working hard as a junior sales associate. She had honed her customer service skills and knew the company product line. She was warm in how she approached people and engaging without being pushy. She had put her name in for the training program to move up to senior sales associate with a shot at entry level management, but her application never seemed to get noticed. She suspected that it was because one of her legs was two inches shorter than the other and she wore a special shoe to compensate. It gave the other women an edge on her.

That particular day things got busy, and everyone was moving fast, trying to take care of all the customers. An elderly woman shuffled up to the counter and try to get attention for service. She was plainly dressed and was being overlooked until the junior sales associate stopped by and engaged her. The woman asked several questions, looked at several items and in the end, didn’t purchase any of them. She did take the young woman’s card and went on her way.

The next day, the young woman found an email in her inbox, informing her that she had been awarded a slot in the next round of training for senior sales associate. The email was from the chief financial officer of the company. She had received the woman's card from one of the principal investors who spoke of the high level service and attention that she had received from this woman.

The Word became flesh and came to the world that He created, but His own people disdained and marginalized him. But there were some who did receive Him. To them He gave the right to be included, the right to become children of God.

In one of the great plot twists of all time, the One who was rejected is the one who gives the right to be included in the way that mattered most.

As we seek to rekindle our passion for the Lord, consider again His patience toward us, His compassion, His love, His generosity. It was after being rejected, after being persecuted, tortured, publicly humiliated and crucified, that He gave this right to those who received Him.

Years ago, Andrae Crouch penned these simple words:

I don't know why Jesus loves me.
I don't know why He cares.
I don't know why He sacrificed His life.
Oh! But I'm glad, so glad He did!

Where would I be if Jesus didn't love me?
Where would I be if Jesus didn't care?
Where would I be if He hadn't sacrificed His life?
Oh! But I'm glad, so glad He did!

He left His mighty throne in glory
To bring to us redemption's story
Then He died and He rose again
Just for me!
Oh! And I'm glad, so glad He did!
