40 Days of Praise - Day 14

Day 14

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us

John 1:14a

John 1:1-2 told us that the Word was in the beginning and that the Word was with God. It also told us that the Word was God, alongside God. The Word is a who and not a what, a person and not a thing.

All of creation came into being through Him. Life was in Him – of course it was! All creation came through Him – and that life brought light into the world.

How did that life and light come into the world?

The Word became flesh. He wasn’t made flesh by some other means. The Father didn’t force this upon Him; the Spirit didn’t bring about the change. The Word didn’t cease being God. All that the Word had been, He continued to be when He became flesh.

He didn’t take on flesh like a garment to be discarded when He was done with it. When Jesus appeared after His resurrection, He was still flesh. When we see Him in eternity in the book of Revelation, He is riding a white horse, leading the armies of heaven, and His name is called The Word of God (Revelation 19:11-16). He is fully human.

Not only do I not understand how the Word who was with God in the beginning could become flesh, I cannot fathom what that meant in terms of His daily existence. God is infinite in all his characteristics. Regarding time, He is eternal. Regarding space, He is omnipresent. Regarding knowledge, He is omniscient. Regarding ability, He is omnipotent. How did He shift from all that and His many other attributes, to the limitations of being human? And how could He still be God and become flesh?

Yet, as we saw yesterday, He did this to give those who receive Him the right to become children of God. The Word of God, God the Son, became human forever for us.

“…the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20)
